In 1999 the Stuttgart Pavilion, the result of an international architectural competition, had been built. It was the will of both the student body and the President of the University of Stuttgart to create additional Internet access points on the downtown campus and it was more than obvious to use the pavilion for this purpose. The project was supported by IBM Germany. On December 4th 2000 the first Internet Café at the University of Stuttgart opened to the students.
To create the Internet Café I chose a thin client concept based on IBM ICA terminals connected to a Windows Terminal Server. This enabled us to fit 10 terminals in a rather small space. Using LCD monitors added to the overall low power consumption avoiding heat problems. The technical installation is chosen not to disturb the architectural concept. The server is located separately in a secured area. |
